Tara Watson, Miss Texas, spoke and sang for the club on Wednesday October 25, 2000. She was one of the top 10 in the Miss America contest. She spoke on her AIDS platform and sang two songs. David Smith composed a song in her honor which went as follows:

The Eyes of Texas are upon you,
all the live-long day.
The Eyes of Texas are upon you,
you cannot get away.
Do not think you can escape them,
at night or early in the morn'.
The eyes of Texas are upon you,
'til Gabriel blows his horn.

Tara, don't you know-
Tara, don't you know-
Tara, don't you know
We love you so!

Tara, don't you know-
Tara, don't you know-
Tara, yes we love you
So!

Tara is the daughter of Bill and Ann Watson of Lufkin, who also attended the Kiwanis meeting. She attended Lufkin High School and graduated Cum Laude. At TCU she was the Most Outstanding Phi Beta Phi both her Sophomore and Senior years.

Tara is a 22 year old senior at Texas Christian University majoring in Speech Language Pathology. As Miss Texas 2000, she earned the opportunity to compete for the title of Miss America in October in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Tara's education is being paid for by the $27,000 plus in scholarship money she has won at the local, state and national levels of the Miss America Organization, which is the single largest source of scholarships for women in the entire world.

Tara is an accomplished dancer as well as a very entertaining singer. She won Miss Texas with a very moving rendition of "I've Got a Crush On You". Her leadership abilities have been rewarded with the Yellow Rose of Texas Award given by the past Governor Ann Richards.

As Miss Texas 2000, Tara travels daily on a statewide speaking tour promoting the 'Texas Cares for Children Program' as well as her platform AIDS Awareness and Education, Facing the Epidemic. She will make more than 400 appearances talking with approximately 100,000 students at 200 plus schools.

On Saturday October 21, the annual Turkey Shoot was held. Go to the Turkey Shoot page for details on this.

Ground breaking ceremony for the new Girl Scout House is set for Tuesday, October 31st at 10 A.M. It will be at the Red Barn Foundation property on FM 819, about 0.5 miles from Loop 287. Want to get a lot of Kiwanians out there.
