Kiwanis of Lufkin, TX

TURKEY SHOOT
18, 2008OCTOBER
Each fall the Kiwanis Club of Lufkin holds a turkey shoot in an effort to raise money for their programs. Kiwanis supports with donations and/or man hours many local organizations. The proceeds from the annual Turkey Shoot go to the scholarship fund for high school students from Lufkin, Diboll, Huntington, Hudson, Central and Zavalla.
The annual Turkey Shoot was initiated in 1968 during the presidency of David Walker. The proceeds were to be used for the scholarship program which was also started in 1968 when Dixon Abney, who owned a hardware store with Kiwanian Earl Medford, gave the club $500 for a scholarship program when Medford died. The scholarship program now pays out 9 scholarships each year at $500 each and the fund keeps growing.
The "Turkey" Shoot is held each Fall at Kit McConnico Park. The actual
shooting consists of firing a 22 rifle supplied by Kiwanis and shooting at a target
approximately 3" x 3" at a distance of approximately 75 yards. If the
participant hits the target, they get a certificate good for one frozen turkey. Each
person turns the tickets over to a Kiwanian and get their bullets, 3 shots per ticket.
There is a limit of 2 turkeys per shooter. Then all ticket stubs are
turned in for the drawing for the following prize(you do not have to be present for this
drawing):
Last years items are shown. The 2008 items have not been determined yet.

Make it a family outing. If you have a child old enough to stand up, they are old enough to try their luck. Adult supervision is present all the time. Children under 12 years of age can rest the rifle on the stand. Make it a brighter Thanksgiving for both your family and students who receive scholarships. Tickets are $2 each or 3 tickets for $5. You can obtain tickets from any Kiwanian. Can also buy tickets at the Shoot.

Fun for the whole family.
