Angelina County Master Gardeners

The Angelina County Master Gardeners are county residents who love gardening, have received 70 hours of instruction in horticulture, have completed 70 or more hours of community service and desire to share their knowledge of home gardening with the public. The purpose of the Master Gardeners is to promote gardening in Angelina County by teaching and sharing information about all types of home gardening with the public.

There are currently 30 Master Gardeners in Angelina County who have volunteered in a variety of gardening projects. Demonstration gardens have been planted and maintained for several years at the Farmer’s Market. A “Stumpery”, or shade garden in the dry creek bed was added to the demonstration gardens. Master Gardeners answer questions about home gardening at the Extension office, and speak to garden clubs and civic groups. Each April a plant sale is held, featuring plants propagated and grown by members. Proceeds are used to fund educational programs for the county.

Angelina County Master Gardeners have had a great year in 2008.  They have assisted Extension with several educational activities. Projects have included the Farmer's Market, landscaping seminars, a plant sale, children's programs, speaking at garden clubs, and more.

Master Gardeners are volunteers for Extension that are trained in the field of horticulture and get to know some wonderful gardeners.

Thirty volunteers have worked though the Angelina County Agrilife Extension this past year on horticultural projects.  Some of those are highlighted below:

  • EarthKind Rose trials in front of the office

  • The Stumpery experimental garden in the Farmer's Market dry creek

  • Propagation workshop

  • Landscaping Seminars w/ instruction from Master Gardeners

  • Junior Master Gardener programs at Huntington Elementary

  • Annual Spring Plant Sale

  • Beautification of beds at the Texas Forest Museum

  • Assistance in the office
